Moving to Wasaga Beach is about more than buying a home near the water. You are choosing a growing four-season community with schools, sports, shopping, healthcare, trails, recreation and easy access to Collingwood, Blue Mountain and Barrie.I have lived in Wasaga Beach for many years, raised my family here and helped buyers and sellers throughout Southern Georgian Bay for close to two decades. My children have attended local schools, participated in rep hockey, basketball and soccer, and our family has been involved with many of the local sports organizations.That local experience matters because every area of Wasaga Beach feels a little different. Some neighbourhoods are closer to schools and sports facilities. Others offer larger lots, quieter streets, newer homes, golf-course living or easy access to the beach.Here is what families should know before making the move.

Schools in Wasaga Beach

Wasaga Beach elementary students are served by the Simcoe County District School Board and the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board.The Town currently lists four elementary schools within Wasaga Beach. Secondary students presently attend schools in nearby Collingwood, Stayner or Elmvale, but two local high schools are planned for the community.

Elementary Schools

  • Wasaga Beach Public School
    Wasaga Beach Public School is part of the Simcoe County District School Board. It is located in the west end of town near the Wasaga Stars Arena, Wasaga Beach Public Library and the site of the future Catholic K to 12 school.
    This location is especially convenient for families living in newer west-end neighbourhoods and communities near Sunnidale Road, River Road West and Theme Park Drive.
  • Worsley Elementary School
    Worsley Elementary School is a public elementary school serving families in the central and eastern parts of Wasaga Beach.
    Worsley also offers French Immersion programming. Families interested in French Immersion should always confirm the current entry requirements, program availability and school boundary directly with the school board before purchasing a home.
  • Birchview Dunes Elementary School
    Birchview Dunes is the newest public elementary school in Wasaga Beach. It was added to help accommodate the town’s growing population and gives local families another modern school option.
    The school is located in the east end of town and is convenient for families living near River Road East, New Wasaga Beach, Allenwood Beach and surrounding neighbourhoods.
  • St. Noel Chabanel Catholic School
    St. Noel Chabanel is the Catholic elementary school currently serving Wasaga Beach.
    It is part of the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board and provides Catholic education for local elementary students. Families should confirm eligibility, transportation and school boundaries with the Catholic board.
The Town of Wasaga Beach lists Birchview Dunes, St. Noel Chabanel, Worsley and Wasaga Beach Public School as the four elementary schools located in town.

French-Language, Christian and Private Options

Families looking for alternatives to the English public and Catholic systems may also explore:
  • École élémentaire catholique Notre-Dame-de-la-Huronie
    A French-language Catholic elementary school located in Collingwood. Families should confirm transportation, admission eligibility and current boundaries directly with the French Catholic school board.
  • Silvercrest Christian School
    A private Christian school option serving families in the Southern Georgian Bay area. Private-school programs, grade availability and tuition can change, so parents should contact the school directly.
  • Little House Montessori
    A Montessori-style option for families interested in a smaller educational environment and a different approach to early learning.
  • True North Christian Academy
    Another Christian education option available to families in the broader area. Parents should confirm grades offered, transportation and current registration details.

Current Secondary Schools

Wasaga Beach does not yet have an operating high school within town. Depending on the program and school boundary, local students may currently attend:
  • Collingwood Collegiate Institute
    A public secondary school in Collingwood offering regular academic programming, athletics, clubs and extracurricular activities.
  • Stayner Collegiate Institute
    A public secondary school located in Stayner. Some Wasaga Beach students are directed here depending on their home address and current board boundaries.
  • Elmvale District High School
    A public secondary school in Elmvale that may serve students from parts of Wasaga Beach and surrounding rural areas.
  • Our Lady of the Bay Catholic High School
    The Catholic secondary school in Collingwood. It serves Catholic high-school students from Wasaga Beach and other Southern Georgian Bay communities.
  • Simcoe Shores Secondary School, Wasaga Beach Campus
    Simcoe Shores provides alternative and continuing-education programming. It can be an important option for students who benefit from a smaller, more flexible or individualized learning environment.
School boundaries are not always based on the closest school. Before purchasing a home, parents should check the property address through the appropriate school-board boundary tool and confirm transportation directly with the board.

Two New High Schools Are Coming

Wasaga Beach has been one of Ontario’s largest communities without its own high school, but that is changing.
  • New Catholic K to 12 School and Community Hub
    Construction began in 2026 on a new Catholic Kindergarten to Grade 12 school beside the Wasaga Stars Arena and Wasaga Beach Public Library.
    The project is expected to include elementary and secondary classrooms, childcare spaces, a track-and-field facility, a community theatre and shared learning opportunities.
    Recent Town information announced that the school is expected to welcome students in September 2028. Earlier planning documents referred to 2027, so families should follow the Town and Catholic school board for the final confirmed opening date.
  • New Simcoe County District School Board High School
    A second high school has also received provincial funding. This will be a public secondary school with space planned for approximately 1,145 students.
    The Town has indicated an expected opening around 2029, although construction and opening schedules can change as planning moves forward.
These schools are a major step forward for local families. They will eventually reduce the amount of time many teenagers spend travelling by bus to neighbouring communities and create more opportunities for school sports, clubs, performances and community events close to home.

Beaches and Waterfront Lifestyle

Wasaga Beach is known for more than 14 kilometres of sandy shoreline along Georgian Bay. The Town divides the shoreline into eight beach areas, including Allenwood Beach, New Wasaga Beach and Beach Areas 1 through 6.Each area has its own feel.
  • Allenwood Beach
    Located at the eastern end of town, Allenwood is generally quieter and offers beautiful views toward Christian Island. Amenities include parking, washrooms and a kiteboarding launch.
  • New Wasaga Beach
    New Wasaga has a more natural shoreline with dune vegetation. It is often quieter than the main beach areas and can be a good choice for families looking for a relaxed beach day.
  • Beach Area 1
    Often called the Main End, this is the busiest and most active part of the beachfront.
    It is close to restaurants, shops, events, live music, attractions and the Nottawasaga River. Families who enjoy activity and entertainment often like this area, while buyers looking for quiet surroundings may prefer another section of town.
  • Beach Area 2
    Beach Area 2 is a popular family location with a playground, picnic areas, volleyball, washrooms, parking, a boardwalk and an accessible Mobi-Mat.
    It also provides beautiful sunset and escarpment views.
  • Beach Area 3
    Beach Area 3 is the designated dog-friendly beach. Dogs are permitted on the sand in the designated area but must remain leashed.
    The area also provides parking, washrooms, picnic space, bicycle paths and access to the Shore Lane Trail.
  • Beach Area 4
    Beach Area 4 has a quieter, more local feel. It includes parking, washrooms, picnic areas, a playground and an accessible Mobi-Mat.
    It is also close to west-end shopping and restaurants.
  • Beach Area 5
    Beach Area 5 includes parking, picnic areas, a playground, washrooms and an accessible Mobi-Mat.
    This is another popular option for families who want beach access without the heavier activity found at the Main End.
  • Beach Area 6
    Beach Area 6 is located at the western end of the shoreline. It offers washrooms, parking, picnic space and a kiteboarding launch.
    It connects directly to the Carly Memorial Trail and the town’s wider cycling network.

Important Beach Information

  • There are no lifeguards supervising the beach, so parents must watch children closely.
  • Water conditions can change quickly.
  • Beach-water advisories may be posted after heavy rain, high waves, heat or periods of heavy use.
  • Check the Town and Ontario Parks water-quality information before swimming.
  • Parking requirements differ by area and season.
  • Residents may have access to municipal parking programs, but eligibility and rules should be checked annually.
  • Dogs are only permitted on the sand in the designated Beach Area 3 dog section.
  • The lake is often shallow near shore, but wind, waves and river currents can still create dangerous conditions.
The Town regularly updates water-quality information and advises swimmers to check conditions each time they visit.

Shopping and Everyday Needs

Wasaga Beach is no longer simply a summer cottage destination. It is a year-round community with grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, banks, home-improvement services and everyday shopping.

Stonebridge Town Centre

Stonebridge is one of the main shopping areas in town.You will find:

West-End Shopping

The west end of Wasaga Beach has another large concentration of stores and services, including:

Shopping Near Wasaga Beach

Collingwood is approximately 15 to 20 minutes away from many parts of town and provides additional options, including:

Barrie is generally about 40 to 50 minutes away, depending on your location, traffic and weather. It offers larger shopping centres, more specialized services and a Costco.One of the advantages of living in Wasaga Beach is that you can often purchase a larger home at a lower price than a comparable property in Collingwood while still being only minutes away from Collingwood’s shopping, restaurants and services.

Hospitals

  • Collingwood General and Marine Hospital
    The closest hospital and emergency department for most Wasaga Beach residents is in Collingwood, generally around 15 to 25 minutes away depending on the property, traffic and weather.
  • Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre
    RVH in Barrie is the nearest larger regional hospital and offers a broader range of specialized services. Travel time is usually around 40 to 55 minutes.
People who do not have a family physician can register with Ontario’s Health Care Connect program. Because healthcare availability changes, buyers with specific medical needs should research providers before moving.
